Nap Time is Sacred Time

She insisted on taking both her shoes and jacket to bed with her.

At the risk of sound sacrilegious let me just say that nap time is sacred time.

All the moms of littles are nodding their heads and thinking “heck yes”, while everyone else thinks I’m crazy.

I think I can live with that reaction.

Ok why is nap time sacred?

Well two reasons, first without nap time you end up with… a demon.

No really, without nap time you end up with a demon child.

Think Children of the Corn or Chuckie… except real, and they’re SCREAMING “MOMMY!!!!!” and they’re your problem.

Sometimes you’re lucky and the demon is willing to go to bed early and sometimes just to punish you for your misdeeds you end up with a demon who choses to stay up passed their bedtime and continue the fun… for days to come.

There are very few things that motivate me to miss nap time.

I hate whining, and skipping this sacred time of day results in… so much whining that by dinnertime my ears are ringing and my brain no longer functions.

I’m still teaching Mr. Spreadsheets about the importance of nap time. I think we’ve established that only the house on fire or a trip to the ER is worth the trouble skipping nap time brings.

The second reason is that nap time= Mommy’s time.

I’m not saying I sit around and eat bon bons on the couch while watching trashy soap operas during nap time, nothing that luxurious.

But nap time is the time where I get to be efficient, check things off my list, and no one talks to me.

Nap time is one of my favorite times of day.

We don’t have to listen to the Ghostbusters song on repeat during nap time, sometimes I listen to podcasts, audiobooks, the radio, or gasp even just work in silence.

Nap time is the time where I clean up the morning’s messes, catch up on work, and prep for dinner.

It’s the time where I gather my thoughts and psych myself up for the long slow meltdown to bedtime (you know this happens at your house too).

Without nap time I feel frazzled, don’t get things done, and by dinnertime my frustration level is through the roof.

It’s the time when I don’t have to talk to anyone. And to be honest I don’t want to talk to anyone for ANY reason (except via text message) during this time.

So nap time is sacred time.

Next time you think about suggesting a child miss a nap consider that you’re unleashing a demon , and ruining what might possibly be the best part of someone’s day.

12:30-2:30pm is sacred time.

Nothing should EVER be scheduled during this time.

If you know a mom with kids under 5, trust me, you can wait to see, talk, or email them until after 3pm. Trust me, whatever you want to say or do can and should wait until after 3pm.

Because let’s be honest, nap time is sacred.
