Something Daring

I asked Mr. Spreadsheets if he thought it would be cool if we picked a random city in the US, packed up our kids and moved there. He looked at me like I’d lost my mind.

I think I’m living the words of the Reba McEntire classic Is There Life Out There

Is there life out there
So much she hasn’t done
Is there life beyond
Her family and her home
She’s done what she should
Should she do what she dares
She doesn’t want to leave
She’s just wonderin
Is there life out there

She’s always lived for tomorrow
She’s never learned how
To live for today
She’s dyin’ to try something foolish
Do something crazy
Or just get away
Something for herself for a change

There’s a place in the sun that she’s never been
Where life is fair and time is a friend
Would she do it the same as she did back then
She looks out the window and wonders again

I don’t have a lot of regrets, but I do wonder what would it be like if we tried something new.

Mr. Spreadsheets and I are stable, we rarely make choices without serious discussion, research and contemplation, we were old long before we turned 30. We play it safe, we don’t take unnecessary risks, we generally make sure that every plan has a contingency plan, and that every contingency plan has a back up plan.

We are the boring ones, the dependable ones, the people that pay their bills on time and save for the future.

I love those things about us, I love the routine, the stability, and the sense of purpose that life brings, but I think 31 is the year to do something crazy!

I told Mr. Spreadsheets we should think about moving in the same breath that I told him I wanted to dye blue streaks in my hair. I think he’s concerned for my mental health.

So maybe we won’t move anytime soon, but isn’t the idea of picking a place and making a life there exciting?

Mr. Spreadsheets reminded me that we’ve done that three times- we’ve lived in NYC, Dallas, and now Austin. Each time we moved to a place where we knew almost no one, where we knew little to nothing about the area, where we had to make our own way in the world- so we’ve done it.

But every place was “safe”, I think it would be exciting to move somewhere crazy like Maine, or Indiana, or Seattle- somewhere we’ve never even been.

And PS Reba is amazing.
